Charles & Ray Eames chairs manufactured by Hille in the UK

During the 1960s and 1970s, one of the four official licensees permitted to manufacture the Charles and Ray Eames designs was Hille International Ltd.

Hille, as it is known to collectors, was based at Haverhill in England and manufactured the Charles & Ray Eames ranges under license granted by Herman Miller in the United States.

For the historians amongst us, the three pictures on the right show a selection of Hille's marketing materials from the 1960s and 1970s.

Hille International went on to manufacture the Supporto chair, designed by Frederick Scott, which is also supplied by Scott Howard office furniture.

Hille advertising their Charles and Ray Eames chairs
We cannot begin to explain how incredibly rare it is to find versions of Charles Eames chairs with the authentic labels showing they were made here in the UK under license by Hille International Ltd. After 10 years of searching, the lounge chair shown below appeared for sale on the UK market. It is ironic that something this rare was found on
Lounge chair designed by Charles and Ray Eames and manufactured by Hille
Shown below is the label found on the underside of this lounge chair, which clearly says: "Made by Hille of London Ltd. sole concessionaires for British Commonwealth and Scandinavia". We can also date this chair as being manufactured in the 1970s as it uses cross head screws.

Hille of London produced the full range of Charles Eames designs. Here is an aluminium group chair, manufactured by Hille.

The universal base dates this chair prior to 1968 and the Hille label, found on the bottom of the chair, proves its authenticity.

If any customers believe that they may own an antique Hille chair which they wish to have valued, we here at Scott Howard would be happy to help verify its authenticity and provide an insurance valuation.
